Detecting Hidden Internet-Connected Devices

It is becoming incredibly easier to stalk and harass someone using unassuming objects in their own home. It includes everyday objects like smart TVs and bulbs that are not designed for stalking but can be used by someone to monitor your presence and activity in your home. However, it also includes small personal security devices like pet cameras and location trackers that can be harder to find. Contrary to popular assumptions, most of these devices are easily accessible to the common public on platforms like Amazon for extremely cheap prices. However, there are also a plethora of commercial solutions like bug detector devices and services that aim to help people discover such abuse. In this project, we would like to understand how effective these solutions are at assisting people in discovering internet-connected hidden devices.

We are currently recruiting participants for an observation study related to this project. To participate and find more details, please see the poster/flyer, and fill out this form
